Deusto University will build its medicine faculty in a building adjacent to the Zorrotzaurre IMQ clinic

21/05/2018

Deusto University has made public its intention to build its new medicine and nursing faculty in a building adjacent to the Zorrotzaurre IMQ clinic. The project will be undertaken by the Catalan architect Carlos Ferrater, designer of the Igualatorio clinic and will have a footage of 14,000 sq.m.

The university usage of the building will be reconciled with that of the medical service (out-patient clinics and some specialisms such as ophthalmology).

Several sites are being assessed, including a plot behind the clinic, where the garages are currently located, while awaiting the ruling from City Hall given that the Planning Advisory Board has to approve the project. A positive response is nevertheless expected; indeed, the Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, just a few days ago described this project as “extraordinary” and has championed the support of the institutions for it to go through.

The project promotors calculate that the works will not begin before 2020, because the Bilbao General Plan that has to authorise the Project will not be passed until then, and the new medicine and nursing faculty is then expected to open at its Zorrotzaurre site within five years.
