G&C Arquitectura y Jansana Arquitectes winners of the competition for the design of the green zones of Zorrotzaurre

A jury presided over by Ibon Areso and composed of members from the Bilbao City Council, the Basque Government, the Sociedad Promotora Inmobiliaria Margen Derecha, Vicinay Cadenas and the Management Commission team has awarded the drawing up of the urbanisation project for the free spaces (or green zones) in Zorrotzaurre.

The winning team comprised two firms; González Cavia y Cabrera Arquitectura Urbanismo y Paisaje (Bizkaia) and Jansana, de la Villa, de Paauw, Arquitectes (Barcelona).

The jury’s choice was from among the 5 finalists of the 20 teams of architects, civil engineers and landscapers that participated in the competition.

The members of the jury praised the quality of the projects presented by the 5 finalists and justified their choice of the Basque-Catalan team due to the conceptual clarity of their proposal to link all the spaces with water, whilst maintaining a formal difference between the two banks to respect their different characteristics and dimensions.

On the right bank, they recreate the concept of a path of towrope, whilst on the island they propose different sequential spaces, interrelated to each other and to the water with an adequate proportion of green zones, seating areas and play areas.

The jury took a particularly positive view of the idea of integrating, into the free areas of the island, part of the pedestrian precinct of the central avenue, thereby increasing the spatial dimensions of the area.

The budget for the contract is 211,750 euros (VAT included) and the design work under the contract is due in 5 months, without including the periods of municipal decision-taking.

The work consists of the drawing up of two documents (a preliminary architectural draft for Zorrotzaurre as a whole and the Construction project for the first phase) which will define the general conceptual aesthetics of the Zorrotzaurre green zones (a total of 157,000m2) and the principal elements of these zones (paving, urban furniture, trees and vegetation, etc)
