Demolition of a port warehouse located on the Deusto Canal begins

03/05/2012

The demolition, by the Management Commission, of a port warehouse located on the right bank of the Deusto Canal began today.

The building commonly known as the Jet Lag Building was a former warehouse of the shipping firm Agemasa. It has recently been the show-case for the activities of the Jet Lag Bio programme led by the Bilbao City Council in support of social and cultural expression by young people.

It was initially to have been conserved and converted into a public use facility but its destiny changed with the agreement in October 2010 between the Management Commission and the Neighbours’ Association El Canal.

The demolition, which is being carried out under the strictest waste management systems, will free up 3,700 m2 of land for the uses specified in the Special Plan for the area. Work is expected to finish in 2 months at a cost of 50,000 euros.

Earlier demolition phases in the urban regeneration project of Zorrotzaurre, undertaken in 2008 and 2009, freed up nearly 42,000 m2 of land.

Over the next few months, further demolitions, by both the Management Commission and private owners, will take place.
