MASTER PLAN
Mobility and accessibility
Zorrotzaurre will be integrated with its neighbours on both bank of the Nervión through an exciting sequence of bridges. These will allow the river to become a significant part of the daily life of the neighbouring “barrios”. The opening of the canal will be resolved by the construction of two bridges to communicate the island with Deusto, another four (including a pedestrian bridge) to San Ignacio and Sarriko and a bridge over the river will link Zorrotzaurre and Zorrotza.
The design of the road network will dissuade high speeds, which together with its condition of an island will mean virtually no through traffic for Zorrotzaurre whilst creating efficient links to cross the river and for neighbouring districts.
The riverside road will be transformed to give pedestrians priority and a network of cycle paths will favour sustainable mobility.
However, the most important part of the transport system will be the extension of the tram network over the whole length of Zorrotzaurre creating a spinal column of activity on the island and connecting the “barrios” further down-river to centre of Bilbao. The connection for the tram with the Ensanche will be via a new bridge parallel to the Euskalduna bridge.
The bridges, the streets and the tram reflect a firm commitment to convert Zorrotzaurre into a central sustainable part of daily life in Bilbao and its metropolis. Its full integration in these different scales guarantee that it will be an important asset for both.
