Opening of the promenade on the right bank of the Deusto Canal

The opening of the promenade on the right bank of the canal implies for citizens the provision of a pedestrian route of more than two kilometers in length that runs along the Deusto Canal, from the Elorrieta roundabout to the Frank Gehry bridge.

The neighbors of Bilbao, and mainly those who reside in Elorrieta, San Ignacio, Sarriko and Deusto, gain with this new infrastructure a promenade in the port areas, zones that remained closed till now.

The promenade has a minimum width of 20 meters and it is composed of areas of stay, viewpoints, gardens, trees. As a singular element, it has a climbing wall under Sarriko, taking advantage of the existing wall and slope.

In the execution of the work, the existing walls in the area have been demolished, while the docks have been rehabilitated and the riverbank has been urbanized with pedestrian areas, flower beds and trees that allow pedestrians to get closer to the estuary.

The promenade has been arranged at two levels in order to protect the new buildings from possible floods; at the same time, the pedestrian zone also operates as a containment dam.

The works of this phase of the Zorrotzaurre project, responsibility of the Contracting Board of the Execution Unit 1 of Zorrotzaurre, began in October 2017 with the creation of the new Ballets Olaeta street and the reurbanization of Morgan street. Subsequently, in September 2018, the works of the promenade started, which have been completed in December 2019.

The construction project has been divided into three different spaces, what has allowed to work in them simultaneously and thus reduce the execution deadlines foreseen initially, 17 months, to the final 15 months that have been.

This work has supposed an investment of 10.3 million euros to the Contracting Board of the Execution Unit 1 of Zorrotzaurre.
