The works to open the Deusto canal progress at a good pace

18/05/2018

The works to completely open the Deusto canal are progressing to plan.According to the latest figures released by Bilbao City Hall, a quarter of the 360,000 cubic metres of earth have now been removed to leave the estuary a free path through the new channel.

Of this figure, around 30,000 cubic metres have been shipped to the mote established by the Bilbao Port Authority in the enlargement of the port.

Alternatively, some 45,000 cubic metres are material that has been taken to authorised dumps to be decontaminated.

The remaining 15,000 cubic metres are going to be subjected to a sifting process in order to obtain two types of material: One will go directly to a dump and the other will be reused in the conditioning works of the new quays.

The process has been speeded up by the incorporation of second dredger which joined these operations at the end of March. The two barges are making five trips a day, which implies they are moving an average of some 3,000 cubic metres of earth every day.
