Zorrotzaurre included in the publication ‘Cities100’ about cities, which are leading the fight against climate change

26/09/2017

The Zorrotzaurre urban renewal Project has been included in the 2017 edition of ‘Cities100’ published by C40 (Cities Climate Leadership Group) and the Danish organisations Realdania and Sustainia.

‘Cities100’ (cities100.com) is a publication, which seeks to identify, connect and communicate the most innovative solutions to climate change problems which affect cities. Its aim is to serve as a guide for politicians, programmes and projects, which create the urban and productive environments of the future. It presents leading-edge solutions to the urban climate challenge in 10 sectors which run from solid waste management to transport.

The 100 solutions included in this year’s edition, the third, correspond to 73 cities in 29 countries around the world and the intention is to highlight the potential of a sustainable future and inspire other people responsible for change world-wide. (http://explorer.sustainia.me/)

The projects are selected after being examined and evaluated by experts using a points system based on 5 criteria: the reduction in CO2 emissions expected; the positive benefits for society; the innovative focus; the way the project is incorporated into urban planning and how well the experience gained in the project is shared with other cities and regions.

The Zorrotzaurre Project has been included in the ‘Adaptation’ category and the planning against possible future flooding, the creation of jobs, the elimination of contaminated soil and the fact that the future island will have extensive green areas and pathways for the public’s enjoyment are highlighted. (http://explorer.sustainia.me/cities/bilbao-from-degraded-peninsula-to-carbon-neutral-island)
